The Andre Johnson Foundation’s goal is to motivate and empower underprivileged youth, to become productive and responsible citizens by advocating healthy lifestyles. The foundation will support and partner with other community organizations that seek to do the same, to increase the impact on youth and the family unit.
We have three areas of focus: Empowering youth to make a difference, impacting lives by giving back, and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
Empowering Youth to Make a Difference
Academic Excellence Program at Bastian Elementary School
In an effort to spotlight education, Andre created an academic excellence recognition program at Bastian Elementary School, within the Houston School Independent District, to honor students who excel in the classroom. As part of their recognition, he holds a special ceremony where he personally distributes awards to students who excel in academics, athletics, attitude and aptitude. Top students in each grade are also selected each six weeks to attend a Houston Texans home game.
AJ’s Playbook for Success
In an effort to spotlight education, Andre created a character development and etiquette program for students at Bastian Elementary School in Houston, TX, to educate students on the importance of building the qualities of a leader and proper etiquette to prepare them for the real world experiences. As part of their recognition, Andre holds a special ceremony upon graduation from the course, where students have lunch at a restaurant and showcase their etiquette skills and present what they have learned.
AJ’S Crew Ticket Program
The Andre Johnson Foundation created AJ’s Crew to invite youth from accredited 501(c) 3 non-profit groups to attend Houston Texans regular season home games. Youth receive team memorabilia, an AJ’s Crew T-shirt as well as food and beverages during the game. Youth must earn tickets by developing and implementing a community service project as a group. Johnson has donated tickets to almost 1,500 youth since joining the team.
Impacting Lives by Giving Back
Give Back. Give Thanks.
Each year, Andre Johnson teams up with H-E-B and Texans teammates and Houston Texans owner, Bob McNair, to help tackle hunger in the Houston area. The Houston Food Bank helped identify agencies that were in need. To date, over 5,000 families in the Houston-area have received groceries and fixings (including a turkey) for Thanksgiving dinner.
AJ’s Shopping Spree
Since 2007, Andre Johnson has hosted 12 youth to attend his annual holiday shopping spree at Toys ‘R’ Us. Johnson selects underprivileged youth, usually in the care of Child Protective Services, from ages 8-16 to attend the annual event. Each child gets 80 seconds to race through the store and grab whatever items they can in the allotted time. Johnson has donated close to $104,500 on youth during in this event in the past four years.
Blue Santa Program
Since 2010, Andre has partnered with Blue Santa Houston to raise funds and awareness
to provide toys to children in need during the holidays. Through this partnership, Blue
Santa Houston provides toys for every student, about 800 total, at Bastian Elementary, a
Houston-area school adopted by foundation.
The Home Depot Neighborhood MVP
In 2008, Andre Johnson was selected as one of eight finalists for The Home Depot NFL
Neighborhood MVP program. The Home Depot NFL Neighborhood MVP is a national
program that recognizes players who are making a positive impact in their local
communities through charitable programs and contributions. Other finalists included:
Keith Brooking, Atlanta; Brian Dawkins, Philadelphia; Mike Furrey, Detroit; Steve
Smith, Charlotte; Amani Toomer, NewYork; Kurt Warner, Phoenix; and Jason Witten;
The eight finalists, narrowed from a field of 17, received a $5,000 donation to the charity of their choice. As part of the program, Home Depot and volunteers refurbished the playground at Mary Walke Stephens Elementary in Houston, TX on behalf of Andre Johnson.
Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles
First & Ten Youth Football Camp
Andre hosts the First and Ten Youth Football Camp, along with other NFL teammates in Houston, TX. Over 2,500 youth have been impacted and taught offensive and defensive skills, as well as valuable character building lessons from the Pros. During the youth football mini-camp, kids learn the fundamentals of football as well as leadership development, team building and self-improvement skills.
Health & Wellness Week
The foundation will partner with The Health Museum in Houston to promote Health & Wellness week. The event will showcase various ways families can introduce healthy living into their everyday lives. The event is a day of fun, food and entertainment for the community. The festivities will include vendor booths that promote healthy living, cooking experiences, games, food, kid-friendly recipes as well as give-a-ways.
